Creating Connie

For today's blog tour post, I'm talking about creating characters - in particular, Connie Summers.
Connie is a psychologist and the lead character in my second novel, BAD SISTER (which is a mere 99p for the ebook at the moment!)

 BAD SISTER

How did Connie come about?

In the few months prior to beginning writing Bad Sister, the central character was already forming in my mind. I knew I wanted a strong, professional woman who’d concentrated on building her career rather than building solid relationships – therefore not marrying and settling down to have a family. However, as well as being a strong character, I wanted to also show her vulnerability – I wanted her to be someone people could relate to on some level. We all have a history, we’ve become who we are due to the experiences we’ve had, so I needed my main character to have had some difficult and challenging things happen in her past, ones that she’s forced to confront in the present. Our experiences shape us, how we see the world – the decisions we make, so I felt it was important to give Connie a reason as to why she chose to work in the criminal justice system. A family tragedy seemed a good way of doing this. Something as traumatic as losing a family member has lasting effects for all involved, and the consequences can be far-reaching; the entire family dynamic can alter. For Connie, this led to her working in forensic psychology, in part to help her understand the experience she and her family went through. But more importantly for Connie, she wanted to do her part in preventing others from enduring such trauma.

When thinking about names, which is a really fun part of writing, I needed one that reflected her personality. I think Connie sounds a strong, no nonsense name. I actually think of Connie from Holby City when I hear the name, and her character is also strong, and she’s career-minded. To balance it out though, I gave my Connie the surname Summers. Sounds soft, conjures images of bright, sunny, happy days. I also wanted her to look striking – so I gave her dark hair in a short bob, and piercing green eyes. This seemed like it could be a look that might make people see her in a certain way – perhaps even intimidating. Again, to contrast this I’ve ensured she comes across as caring, interested in helping people and committed to her job. Of course, her job in the prison isn’t the one that Connie has when we meet her in Bad Sister.

Why?

Because I’ve created another problem for Connie.

I love giving life to my characters and there are loads of tips about creating strong protagonists. I also had to think about how to keep Connie interesting as she is going to be in the next novel! But that’s a whole other blog post!

Here are a few of my tips on creating memorable characters:

  • -    Make sure they have a point: by this I mean, why do you want them in this novel? What is their purpose? What story are they telling? They must have an aim, or goal (preferably more than one) - something that is driving them on, therefore pushing the story forwards and keeping the readers wanting to know what’s next.
  • -     Make sure they are interesting: no one wants to read about a dull character in a dead-end job who does very little and is instantly forgettable! Give them a decent backstory, something that will make them feel real.
  • -    Whether you intend your character to be likeable or not, give them some redeeming qualities! Personally, I’m fine with unlikeable characters, but I know a lot of readers aren’t. If they are going to be people you want readers to hate, at least let them have a good quality or two in order to have a bit of balance.
  • -    You’ll want to put your main character through the mill. Throw lots of problems at them, show them trying and failing to overcome them – but ultimately let them change by the process. They shouldn’t be quite the same person on the final page as they were on the first.

I hope readers enjoy finding out about Connie Summers in Bad Sister – and watch out for her in book three!

It's Day 4 already - and the BAD SISTER blog tour is in full swing!

Yesterday - Day 3 - saw an exclusive extract from Bad Sister on Tracey's blog - Island Girl Book Blogger - you can read it HERE

Today, Day 4 - Katherine has written and shared the most amazing review on her blog, BiblioManiac.
You can read what she has to say about Bad Sister - HERE

I've also been getting other fantastic reviews coming in, and I must say, I'm thrilled with the reception for BAD SISTER so far. Thank you to those who've bought it, and those who've reviewed.
Getting those all-important reviews is the holy grail for writers! I'm hugely appreciative!

Here are a few examples of what readers are saying about BAD SISTER:

"When a new author gives us a debut as brilliant Saving Sophie, you can be forgiven for wondering what else they have to offer ... Will book two live up to our expectations. Well let me tell you, Sam Carrington is NO one-hit wonder!!!
Bad Sister is brilliant! ... As we jump from past to present, we are taken on a journey so mind-blowing that its conclusion will leave your blood tingling!

Do not miss this one folks, it's frigging awesome!!!!" - EmmaTheLittleBookWorm

"...If we were to talk about shocking twists and stunning endings, well this one is pretty awesome and deliciously chilling! ... I was impressed with the level of complexity in the novel which although ambitious, makes for a much more exciting, unpredictable and gripping read... A perfect thriller with depth, complex characters and a storyline that weaves a wicked web that you cannot help but get tangled up in. Put yourself in Carrington's hands and prepare yourself for an explosive read!" - BiblioManiac

"What I like about Sam Carrington’s writing is the tense atmosphere that she creates ... Bad Sister is another thrilling read ... I can’t wait to see what she does next, I will definitely be first in line to read her next book"  Jacob Collins

"Well, of all the places I thought this book would take me to, I never thought we'd end up where we did. In fact, I actually gave up trying to work it out about half way through as I was getting dizzy from all the twists and turns, and a bit frustrated at myself for being led down dead ends, so I acquiesced and just let the author lead the dance. Well, she did a pretty good job of things with Saving Sophie, her previous book which I also enjoyed...The ending when it came was rather shocking ... I was rather gobsmacked although, thinking back with hindsight, all very cleverly worked out." - Ashrae

You can buy BAD SISTER now from Amazon, Kobo, iTunes, GooglePlay and other online stores.

BAD SISTER publication day and Blog Tour!

I can't quite believe my second book has been published! It doesn't seem long ago I was following the blog tour for Saving Sophie, and revelling in the amazing support from family, friends, bloggers and reviewers ... Now, here we are again. BAD SISTER is out!

I'm, yet again, overwhelmed by the support - massive thanks to all who've been part of the journey, and those who are now helping push (guide?) Bad Sister out into the world. I'm so grateful.

Yesterday went by in a bit of a blur, really. There were so many people to thank on social media - I think I spent the majority of the day attached to my laptop. It was wonderful to receive so many 'Congratulations' posts and words of support - and if I missed anyone (which I'm bound to have!) then I'm sorry - and please know I am hugely appreciative of everyone taking the time to tweet, share posts and comment/message me.

I did manage to celebrate in the evening - Chinese, chocolate, champagne ... and Baywatch (the film) with my family - it was perfect.
I also had some fabulous balloons from my lovely friend, Libby - flowers from my hubby - and from my amazing publisher's, Avon.

The blog tour kicked off yesterday on Amanda's blog, Ginger Book Geek, with an extract from Bad Sister, and a fantastic review. You can read her review  HERE and the extract HERE.

Day 2 sees another brilliant review from Emma Mitchell, on her blog - Emma The Little Book Worm - thank you! You can read it HERE

You can read that, HERE!

And... there's more. The lovely Barbara Copperthwaite, whose new novel Her Last Secret, is out in a few days, has me on her What's Their Secret? feature, which you can read HERE

So, all-in-all, a very busy Day 2!

The blog tour is filled with brilliant bloggers - please do follow and support if you can. They do a fantastic job in supporting publishers and authors, they are amazing! Here's the line-up:
Thanks again for all the support.

I have a 'taster' I would like to share with you -

below is the opening of SAVING SOPHIE!

I hope it makes you want to read on...

Prologue

Saturday

‘Shh . . . Don’t speak.’ He releases the strap of the rubber ball gag with his left hand. His right grips a chunk of long, curly hair. Pulling it, twisting it, so she can’t move her head. So tight, she can’t move away from him. So tight, strands of black hair extensions break and tear from her real hair, tiny popping noises oddly loud in her ear.
The gag makes a soft thud on the concrete floor, an innocent sound, incongruent with the function it has just served.
‘Stay quiet now. Still. It’ll be over soon.’
He pushes his head up against her temple, hard. The slick tackiness of his sweat covers her forehead as he presses against her, rubbing his head from side to side. The putrid odour invades her nostrils. She tries not to breathe. Fear takes over; a whimper escapes from her dry mouth.
‘No. No noise. I told you.’ His voice is raspy, menacing.
Her eyes are wide and swollen, wet with fresh tears – her face stained with old ones. She opens her mouth, just a little, daring to utter the words screaming inside her head: Please don’t kill me. He notices the slight movement of her lips and immediately presses his fingers against them, suppressing the words before they can be formed. Only her breath manages to leak through the gaps of his soft fingers; a stifled exhalation.
   Her last.

I've been overwhelmed with all the support I've had for publication day - so many congratulatory comments across social media - I have struggled to keep up (and may have failed!) Please know I am truly grateful for every single tweet, retweet, comment and message! I really hope everyone who reads Saving Sophie can take something away from it. There have been reviews already - thanks to all who have taken the time to read and write a review - I'm in awe of the ability to write a constructive review, but everyone has managed just that! I appreciate every one. No doubt I'll be quoting from them a bit...

Ooh... like this:

And this:

I have had a Q&A over at Avon's twitter account at lunch time today - if you get chance, do go and check out the brilliant 'story in gifs' they did for Saving Sophie - absolute genius!

I will get around to celebrating with the obligatory champagne later - but for now, I'm going to a friends for a coffee and catch-up.

Oh, and I had these super pretty roses from the hubby :)

My thanks again!

Please do let me know what you think of the novel if you read it :)
